School Time

Walking to work this morning, I saw bunches of children following their adult chaperones, either dragging their heels or skipping gleefully as they went to school. The crossing guards all said hello in cheerful voices, and I suddenly realized that I wasn't going to schol for the first fall in about 20 years. While this certainly felt a lot like freedom, it also made me a little bit sad. No shopping trip for new office supplies, no nice clean notebooks to fill, no high hopes for organization this time around. Instead I was walking to a job I've held for 3 months, a job I still like and am hoping to turn into a more permanent gig. I deal with office supplies all day and while new notebooks are still exciting, new yarn is really much more exciting at this point.

This is one more sign that my life has taken a turn away from the academic pattern of life. It seems to be tied more now to the seasons than ever: I go to the farmer's market or the coop and buy local produce. Although the weather has changed here, we're still seeing peaches and the last of the corn. Squash and fennel are coming in now (the first fennel was so tender and delicious...words won't do it justice). My kitchen leans toward lentil soup and warm creamy dishes that take advantage of late summer greens. I'm not yet ready for my steady winter diet of potatoes and potatoes, but I'm enjoying the cool weather and the heartier meals. It's a different kind of shift, still anchored to the fall but for entirely different reasons.

For now, though, it's time for me to get back to work--not school--and write some pieces for our October issue.

I've Been Busy....

Lame excuse for not posting, I know. But Ivan and I have been really busy working and having fun, so I haven't really had time to keep up with the blogging.

The big news is that we had a really big pre-wedding picnic this week, without about 100 people in a state park. There were banjos, fiddles, and guitars, not to mention the huge grill with lots of meat and fresh picked corn roasting on it. Ask if you want to see pictures...

Not much else is going on in this neck of the woods. I'm still knitting, still reading, still working....life is good, and uneventful.

I s'pose I'll write more when I'm less boring.
